RunTempo — running metronome and cadence trainer

The short version: RunTempo has no accounts, and your location, your pace and your runs never leave your iPhone — we could not see them even if we wanted to. The only thing the app sends is anonymous usage statistics, and you can turn those off in Settings.
Who we are
RunTempo is an independent iOS app. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the developer of RunTempo, and "you" means the person using the app.
What RunTempo does with your location
When you start an outdoor or trail run, RunTempo asks for location access so it can measure how far and how fast you are going. Indoor runs never use location at all.
Three things are worth being precise about:
- Your location is processed on your device and is never transmitted. There is no server to send it to. It is used in the moment to calculate distance and pace, and then it is gone.
- Location is only read between the moment you tap START and the moment the run ends. The app does not track you in the background at any other time.
- Tracking continues while your screen is locked, because runners lock their phones. iOS shows its standard location indicator the whole time this is happening.
We ask only for "While Using the App" permission. We never request "Always" access. If you decline, indoor runs still work normally.
What is stored on your device
RunTempo saves a small number of preferences on your iPhone so the app remembers how you like it:

That is the complete list. It contains nothing that identifies you.
Your run summaries are not saved at all. The distance, duration and pace shown at the end of a run exist only while the app is open, and are discarded when you close it. There is no run history stored on the device or anywhere else.
Deleting the app removes everything above from your iPhone.
Apple Music
If you open the music panel, RunTempo asks for permission to see and control what is currently playing, so it can show the track and offer play, pause and skip. This information is read live from your device and is never transmitted or stored.
If you tap the button to find playlists at your tempo, RunTempo opens the Apple Music app or website with a search such as "160 BPM running". That search is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy, not ours.
The version check
When RunTempo opens, it fetches a small file from GitHub to see whether the version you are running is still supported. This is how we can tell you to update if a serious problem is found in an older version.
This request sends no personal data and no information about you or your runs — it only asks for a file. However, like any web request, it reveals your IP address to GitHub, who serve the file. GitHub's handling of that is covered by GitHub's privacy statement.
If the request fails — you are offline, in a tunnel, on a trail with no signal — the app carries on working normally. It never blocks a run.
Anonymous usage data
RunTempo sends anonymous information about how the app is used, so we can see which parts people actually use and where they get stuck. This is processed by PostHog on our behalf, on servers in the European Union.
What is sent:
- That the app was opened, and that the first-run guidance was completed
- How you responded to the location permission request (continue, cancel, or open Settings) — though never the location itself
- That a run was started, with the environment (indoor, outdoor or trail), the goal unit and the target tempo
- That a run finished — whether it reached its goal, roughly how long it lasted (as a range such as "15–30 minutes", never an exact figure), whether recovery breathing was used, and roughly how often it was paused
- Which of the app's screens is on display (home, running, recovery, or the run summary) and how long each stays open
- That the recovery breathing screen or the music panel was opened, and that the playlist search was used
- That a finished run was renamed or given a feeling check-in — but never the name you typed or the feeling you chose
What is never sent:
- Your location, your route, your distance or your pace
- Run names or how you felt after a run
- Anything you typed
- Your name, email address or any advertising identifier
This data is not linked to your identity, because we never learn it. We do not use it to build a profile of you and we do not share it with anyone else.
You can turn this off. Open the iOS Settings app, scroll to RunTempo, and switch off Share anonymous usage data. Nothing further is sent from that moment on.
What we do not do
- We do not have accounts. You never give us a name, an email address or a password.
- We do not use advertising, and we do not access your device's advertising identifier.
- We do not use tracking across other apps or websites, so RunTempo does not ask for tracking permission.
- We do not sell, share or disclose personal data, because we do not hold any.
- We do not use cookies. RunTempo is an app, not a website.
Children
RunTempo is not directed at children under 13, and because the app collects no personal data, it does not knowingly collect anything from children.
Your rights
Privacy laws such as the GDPR and Korea's Personal Information Protection Act give you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data held about you.
In RunTempo's case there is nothing to act on: no personal data ever reaches us. Everything the app stores is on your own device and under your control, and deleting the app erases it. If you would like to ask about this, contact us below.
Changes to this policy
If RunTempo ever begins collecting data — for example if usage analytics are added in a future version — this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the "last updated" date at the top will change. A change of that kind will also be reflected in the app's privacy details on the App Store.
